This summer, Blood:Water has four office interns dedicating their school breaks to creating lasting change in Africa. Meet Anne, Craig, Haley, and Joey–our hardworking, intelligent, and quirky Brady bunch with hearts of gold.

Anne Carpenter

Meet engagement intern, Anne Carpenter, from Statesville, North Carolina

Blue Devils or Tar Heels?

Tar Heels!

Why did you apply to be an intern at Blood:Water?

I want to work in nonprofit after I graduate, so I wanted to use my summer to get a feel for what that will be like. I chose Blood:Water because I’m really drawn to organizations that take a different approach to international aid; one that is focused on reciprocity and dignity. I believe in what Blood:Water does, and I knew I wanted to be a part of it.

What is your favorite book?

Hands down, my favorite book is “Cold Tangerines” by Shauna Niequist. It’s a series of essays about exploring the small joys in life, and finding beauty in all the nooks and crannies of the everyday.

Tell us one of your special quirks!

As a child, I was afraid of Amish people. The simplicity freaked me out for some reason… Weird, I know. A woman at my church staged an “intervention” when I was in middle school where she took me out to Amish country, and made me eat whoopie pies and homemade bread until I came to the realization that, in fact, Amish people rock. Now I am reformed, and an avid lover of all things Amish.

Craig Hendrich

Meet Africa Partnerships intern, Craig Hendrich, from Fort Morgan, Colorado

What is your favorite book?

“The Hole in Our Gospel” by Richard Stearns is my favorite book.

Why did you apply to be an intern at Blood:Water?

I applied to be an intern at Blood:Water because of my passion for people and water. My desire is to work with others to help alleviate the greatest social injustices of our time, and Blood:Water is an incredible organization that aims to sustainably solve these problems.

What is your favorite pastime?

I love playing ultimate frisbee!

What is your dream job?

I want to start my own humanitarian engineering nonprofit to help engineer sustainable change all around the world.

Tell us one of your special quirks!

I have to make my coffee a certain way every day, and that is pour-over coffee!

Haley Appleby

Meet marketing intern, Haley Appleby, from Fort Lauderdale, Florida

What do you miss most about living in Florida?

My family, the weather, and I really miss palm trees.

Why did you apply to be an intern at Blood:Water?

I wanted to gain marketing experience in a positive atmosphere. Plus, Blood:Water’s mission is close to my heart, so that was an added bonus!

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I would only eat sushi.

What is your favorite pastime?

Dancing (insert salsa-dancing lady emoji).

Tell us one of your special quirks!

I would put salt on any food, and I have a weakness for trinkets/souvenirs.

Joey Maloney

Meet engagement intern, Joey Maloney, from Sebastopol, California

What is your dream job?

I want to run an underground apple juice company called “Joey Appleseed.”

Why did you apply to be an intern at Blood:Water?

I love the mission of Blood:Water, and the people on staff are very genuine and heartfelt.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Rice and beans! Just kidding–a Woodstock burger with sweet potato fries from a great Nashville restaurant called Burger Up.

What is your favorite pastime?

I like to write songs and hop trains.

Tell us one of your special quirks!

I like to have dance parties in the car while I am driving, and I like to drive with my knees whenever possible (usually both occur at the same time because my hands are essential to any dance move worth remembering).
