Last week we welcomed two new faces to the Blood:Water team for the summer, and we can’t wait for you to get to know them! Over the next few months, Allie Wood and Bailey Shafer will be assisting in the development and marketing departments, and let me tell you, they are already crushing it. Keep reading to learn more about what makes them special!
Allison (Allie) Wood – Jasper, In
Meet Allie, our new development intern! She’s studying public health at Purdue University, and she is #superchill.
Why did you apply to be an intern at Blood:Water?
Four of my siblings are adopted from Guatemala, Haiti, and Ethiopia, and I have had the privilege to travel to Haiti and Ethiopia several times. So I have seen the affect that the water crisis imposes on people in these communities and have felt a calling to do something about it for as long as I can remember. When applying to college, I knew I wanted to major in something that put me in the position to help people in these countries, but I wasn’t sure what to do exactly. Fast forward, I am now a senior at Purdue University studying global public health with a minor in Spanish and a certificate in social entrepreneurship. Last year, I was surfing the internet for internship opportunities, came across Blood:Water, and immediately loved everything about it.
What is your dream job?
My dream job is to work for a nonprofit organization that is focused on the sustainable development in third-world countries. I also love to travel, so being in a position to travel for work would be the icing on the cake.
What is your favorite book?
I love just about anything by Jodi Picoult.
What is your favorite pastime?
I love being outdoors and spending time with friends and family.
If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Definitely sushi. I have an unhealthy obsession.
Tell us one of your special quirks!
I have 7 siblings (5 being brothers) so I’m probably the most low-maintenance and laid back person you will ever meet!
Bailey Shafer – Knoxville, TN
Meet Bailey, our new marketing & graphic design intern! She is studying graphic design at Lipscomb University. She’d love to grab an iced tea with you, but only if it’s unsweetened.
Why did you apply to be an intern at Blood:Water?
Kenna Chen, a previous intern, told me about it. She said it was her favorite job she’s ever had. I loved the idea of doing a graphic design internship for a non-profit.
What is your dream job?
Something that combines design, travel, and making a difference… if that could all be combined into a single job.
What is your favorite book?
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini or Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis.
What is your favorite pastime?
Travel, arts & crafts, spending time outdoors.
If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Some good chicken soft tacos with chips and guac. Yum!
Tell us one of your special quirks!
I really don’t like sweet tea, but I’m a big unsweet iced tea girl.
