In my previous post about my journey to Africa, I wrote about what it’s like to stand in the middle of a village and realize no one has access to water. While in Turbi, Kenya, there were several first for me, along with the realization that the thirsty were all around me.
Just to give you reference for where Turbi, Kenya is, here are driving directions from Nairobi, Kenya… good luck.
So here’s a little list of some of the “firsts” for me on our first real day in Kenya:
- Flew in a small 5-seater airplane.
- Landing on a dirt runway.
- Used a latrine.
- Visited a traditional Minyata (a house), with a sweet family.
- Showered from a bowl (the ladies in the Turbi village warmed it for me, so sweet).
- I also ate a goat. I actually met the goat before I ate him. I can’t think or write about this one too much. But to be honest it was not bad.
- Slept with a mosquito net and listened to the neighboring donkey hee-haw through the night.
Although some of these were more pleasant than others, there was nothing like meeting the people, hearing their stories, and walking in their shoes. Not all of our Vision Trips look like this, but if you’d like to see the work in Africa first hand, a Vision Trip is a great way to do that.
