About Blood:Water
Blood:Water Partners with African Organizations to End Health Disparities
An international nonprofit partnering with African-led organizations.
Why Blood:Water?
The Water & HIV/AIDS crises are inextricably linked. And Africa is disproportionately impacted by both – half the world’s population that lacks safe access to water is in Africa. Additionally, of the global population living with HIV, 68% are in sub-Saharan Africa.
Many locally led African nonprofits implement water and HIV solutions that drive long-lasting change. But they are under-resourced and underfunded. As a result, civil society organizations struggle to strengthen their reach and effectiveness.

About The Partners of Blood:Water
Since 2004, we’ve partnered with 33 organizations in 12 countries. We focus on areas with the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS and lack of access to clean water, which have historically been in sub-Saharan Africa. Click here for a list of active and historical partners.
We work toward the audacious goal of strengthening 19 partner organizations reaching 686,000 people every eight years. And ultimately, to share in the joy of ending the water and HIV/AIDS crises – with our partners and in this lifetime.
Our local partners are the only way we can achieve the goal of eliminating the HIV/AIDS and water crises. Their daily work and efforts on the ground are what make a lasting impact and true change happen.

About The Blood:Water Model
We make an eight-year funding commitment that includes four two-year cycles. During each cycle, we guide the partner through a proven organizational strengthening model in which they identify key organizational needs. We then fund the needs with a flexible grant earmarked for capacity building.
We use a proven assessment tool used by civil society organizations globally for over 20 years to succeed at strengthening organizations while giving them flexibility with funding to be spent within and on the organization.
Our interventions are geared towards increased positive outcomes in four key areas: team capacity, financial health, program quality, and community representation. We’ll know we’ve succeeded when partners have the essential systems and structures in place to help them increase their reach and deepen their impact.
Do you want to get involved?
There are a number of ways to get involved in the powerful work we’re doing at Blood:Water. Whether volunteering your time, talents or treasures, all are appreciated and welcomed by our organization.
"Blood:Water's approach centers partnership, and they also recognize that there isn't a one-size fits all solution, that they need to understand and follow African-based, -led organizations to find the solutions that are going to take hold."
