Finding Your Nonprofit’s Funding StrategyHow to Build an Organisational Development Plan: A Toolkit for NGOs and FundersFinding Your Nonprofit’s Funding Strategy
Overview
This toolkit guides NGOs through developing an organisational development (OD) plan that strengthens organisational capabilities and supports long-term impact. It outlines four steps: assessing current capabilities against strategic goals, identifying a short list of priorities, determining the resources and funding required, and implementing the plan while tracking progress and learning from results.
The toolkit covers 13 organisational development capabilities, including governance, leadership development, human resources, financial management, fundraising, monitoring and evaluation, programme management, and partnerships. It provides practical templates to help organisations set improvement targets, explain why particular capabilities need investment, identify activities and resources, and distinguish between outputs and outcomes.
It emphasises that OD planning should be collaborative, involving organisational leadership, board members and staff, with funders or external advisers engaged where appropriate. The process is intended to be revisited over time as organisational needs and resources change. Although developed in the Indian NGO context, its planning framework and templates may be adapted by organisations working in other settings.
