While inspiring, these missions can be too expensive to guide decisions about resource allocation effectively. That’s where strategy plays a crucial role.

Strategy focuses on optimizing the use of time, talent, and funding to maximize impact. Developing a strong strategy requires organizations to make difficult trade-offs and establish clarity around their intended impact and theory of change. Intended impact outlines the specific results an organization aims to achieve within a set timeframe (e.g., 5–10 years), identifying the target population, geographic focus, and desired outcomes. Theory of change describes how these results will be achieved, detailing the approaches and collaborations necessary for success. Together, these tools help nonprofits prioritize actions and resources for the greatest potential impact.
