Pursuing the Promise of AI: A Guide for African Nonprofits to Advance Their Missions
Overview
Pursuing the Promise of AI: A Guide for African Nonprofits to Advance Their Missions explores how African nonprofits can responsibly adopt artificial intelligence (AI) to strengthen their programmes, improve service delivery, and advance their missions. Drawing on interviews and focus group discussions with more than 40 nonprofits, social enterprises, funders, experts, and intermediaries across sub-Saharan Africa, the report shares practical insights into the opportunities, challenges, and organizational decisions involved in mission-driven AI adoption.Â
The guide presents a four-stage framework for AI adoption: Explore & Prepare, Prove & Learn, Embed & Operate, and Sustain or Scale. It helps organizations identify the problem they want to solve before choosing an AI solution, assess their data and digital readiness, build staff confidence, test potential applications in real-world conditions, and evaluate whether results justify further investment. It also addresses integrating AI into existing programmes, establishing governance policies, protecting data, managing costs, developing staff capacity, and planning for long-term sustainability.
Particularly relevant to African nonprofits, the report highlights challenges such as limited local-language datasets, uneven digital infrastructure, context-specific data gaps, funding constraints, and the risks of bias and exclusion. It emphasizes that AI is not always the right solution and encourages organizations to prioritize their mission and communities rather than adopt technology simply because it is attracting attention or funding. The guide also identifies opportunities for funders and ecosystem partners to support responsible, locally relevant AI adoption.
