Community Philanthropy In Malawi

Malawi, much like numerous other sub-Saharan nations, faces significant poverty challenges. Recent statistics from the National Statistical Office (2018) reveal that over half of the country’s population was classified as poor, with a fifth of this group considered ultra-poor between 2016 and 2017. This grim socioeconomic situation underscores deep inequality and the underutilization of community philanthropy as a catalyst for economic development. However, there is a scarcity of research on community philanthropy in Malawi, leaving gaps in understanding how it is defined and practiced. Nonetheless, anecdotal evidence highlights various community-driven initiatives like constructing schools and implementing development projects, demonstrating the potential of community philanthropy beyond the traditional corporate social responsibility lens. This report aims to explore and shed light on the landscape of community-level philanthropy in Malawi, examining its nature, contributors, and impact.
