Community Driven Change: Demonstrating Impact in Africa and India

Overview

True development work begins by learning from communities—a principle long championed by pioneers like BRAC. Today, Community-Driven Change (CDC) is gaining momentum as a transformative approach that shifts power to local communities, enabling them to design and lead their own solutions. Unlike traditional aid models, CDC centers local knowledge, self-determination, and equity, ensuring historically marginalized groups shape their futures.

In 2023, Bridgespan partnered with eight organizations to explore CDC’s global potential. This report synthesizes evidence from 800+ households in India, Kenya, and South Africa, alongside case studies and interviews, revealing CDC’s profound impact:

Key Findings:

  1. Power & Assets for Sustained Change:
    • CDC builds individual and collective power—agency, shared vision, leadership—and tangible assets like skills and financial resources.
    • Communities sustaining gains long after external support phases out.
  2. Inclusive & Equitable Impact:
    • Post-CDC, 92% of surveyed community members (vs. 72% before) reported initiatives prioritizing marginalized groups.
    • Shifts in social norms amplified underrepresented voices in decision-making.
  3. Tangible Outcomes Across Sectors:
    • Communities secured non-philanthropic funding, accessed government benefits, and addressed needs holistically.
    • Examples from Africa and India show systemic shifts, from inclusive policies to improved well-being.

Why It Matters for Funders & NGOs:

CDC challenges traditional top-down approaches, proving that local leadership drives deeper, lasting impact. For organizations ready to embrace CDC, the report offers actionable insights to begin or deepen engagement.

The evidence is clear: When communities lead, change is not only possible—it endures. The future of equitable development lies in trusting those closest to the problems to craft the solutions.
